There are rules of engagement for debt collection agencies. Unfortunately, many agencies find these rules too restrictive and violate them to achieve their goals. Debt Collectors must:
- Be honest, treat you fairly, with dignity and respect.
- Identify themselves clearly as debt collectors and inform you of your rights.
Debt Collectors must not:
- Lie, threaten, swear, yell or insult you.
- Speak to your family, friends or neighbors about your debt.
- Call you at work if your employer does not allow personal phone calls.
- Call you before 8am or after 9pm
